Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari has requested the Union Government to sanction a comprehensive traffic and transportation study for Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region under the National Urban Transport Policy and also grant financial assistance for the study.
In a letter to Union Minister for Urban Development Kamal Nath she said under the National Urban Transport Policy cities having population of above 5 lakh qualify for Central financial assistance for traffic and transportation studies by his ministry up to 80 per cent of the cost of the transportation studies.
She recalled that such a study had already been conducted in Mumbai Metropolitan Region and Hyderabad Metropolitan Region.
In view of the expansion of Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority, increase of traffic in Visakhapatnam and surrounding areas strong functional linkages were being experienced between various urban, industrial and institutional areas within the region.
The Principal Secretary, MA and UD, Andhra Pradesh, has also written to the Secretary, in the Union Government that Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region had an area of 5571 sq km spread over four districts. National Highway 5 and National Highway 3 run through the region apart from several state highways and major district roads criss-crossing it.
Mr. Kamal Nath in an earlier letter indicated that financial support up to 50 per cent for preparation of DPR under Urban Transport Planning scheme in case his ministry received the proposal from the State Government.
