A galaxy of leaders and officials takes part in the inaugural function
VIJAYAWADA: Amidst bursting of crackers and soaring balloons, the four-day Krishna Mahotsavam - 2006 was inaugurated by district politicians and bureaucrats together at the sprawling Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium here on Friday.
The 'mahotsavam', highlighting the history and culture of the district, was brought back to life after a gap of two years by the district administration. Earlier, a colourful carnival comprising vehicles carrying messages and achievement of various departments impressed the denizens, who were lined up on the MG Road with all curiosity.
The carnival with NSS and NCC students from various schools and colleges, drum-beating folk artistes, Banjaras and dancers atop various vehicles began at Benz Circle and waded through the MG Road to reach IGMC stadium. The traffic was diverted for few hours for the smooth movement of the carnival. The vintage bus Deccan Queen belonging to era of Nizam's pulled by a jeep drew everyone's attention. Closely following the Red beauty was the latest state-of-art of Volvo, which vividly brought to the fore the change the RTC had went through over the years.
Many NGOs take part
Many non-government organisations took part in the carnival highlighting their service in the rural areas. Students from SRR and CVR College donned the roles of Alluri Seetharamaraju, Bhagat Singh, Indira Gandhi and Kargil war hero, much to the delight of the bystanders.
The carnival, which was scheduled to start at 5.30 p.m. began around 6.30 p.m. and reached the venue at 7.30 p.m. Before the formal inauguration, Kuchipudi dancers enthralled the gathering.
The paucity of lighting at the venue irked dignitaries and Minister for Municipal Administration Koneru Ranga Rao expressed his displeasure over the arrangements. The entire stadium, bereft of illumination, wore a deserted look. Minister for Higher Education P. Venkateswara Rao, Member of Parliament L. Rajagopal, Mylavaram MLA Chanumolu Venkata Rao, Mayor Tadi Sakuntala, ZP chairperson Sudha Rani, Kankipadu MLA Devineni Rajasekhar, UDA Chairman Malladi Vishnu, UDA vice-chairman Durga Das, RTC zonal chairman Jogi Ramesh, District Collector Navin Mittal, Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar took part in the inaugural function.
