NELLORE: Four persons were killed and five others sustained grievous injuries in an accident on the National Highway - 5 near Budhanam of Gudur division on Thursday.

The victims were returning from a pilgrimage to Mecca. The accident occurred when an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus bound for Tirumala from Gudur hit the Scorpio in which the victims were travelling, the police said.

Those killed were identified as Subhani, 60, his brother-in-law Silar Saheb, 48, his son Karimulla, 32, and the driver Mallikarjun. Galib, 55, Ghouse Basha, 55, Roshi, 25, and her one-year-old son Jabbar were injured.

Karimulla and his brother Bazi, the only persons who escaped unhurt, went to Chennai on Wednesday night to receive their father Subhani and others who were returning to India.

Road being repaired

Chillakur Police said that the traffic bound south was diverted to one side of the road on NH-5 near the tollgate to take up repairs on the closed road.

While two of the victims died on the spot two others died while undergoing treatment, the police said. The condition of one-year-old Jabbar was stated to be critical.
