TIRUPATI: The ‘International Nursing Day' was observed at a function organised jointly by the Microbiology Department and the College of Nursing at SVIMS super specialty hospital here on Wednesday.

After paying tributes to the statue of the ‘Lady with the lamp' Florence Nightingale, whose death centenary is being observed on Wednesday across the globe, Member of Parliament (Chittoor) N. Sivaprasad inaugurated a photo exhibition displaying interesting pictures on the life history of Nightingale and the incidents that shot her to fame.

Dr. Sivaprasad, himself a medical practitioner, appealed to the nurses to take a leaf from the life of Florence Nightingale and serve the patients with love and care. He later flagged off a procession of nurses from the Nursing College to Ruia hospital via Vivekananda circle.

K. Reddemma, Dean of Behavioural Sciences at NIMHANS (Bangalore), SVIMS Director B. Vengamma, Medical Superintendent T. Srinivasa Rao, RMO B. Govind Narayana, Nursing college principal N. Sudharani and Microbiology head A.Gururaj Kumar took part.

Balaji Institute of Surgery, Research and Rehabilitation for the Disabled (BIRRD), the TTD's orthopaedic initiative for the benefit of the poor, celebrated the day for the first time. Director G. Jagadish felicitated Nursing Superintendent Y. Venkatalakshmi Katyayani with the ‘Best Nurse' award consisting of a memento and a certificate.
