Four of the seven major camps would be closed down by Wednesday morning

  • As on Tuesday, 4,620 people still taking shelter in the camps.
  • Barring families from Padmavathi Ghat and Kanakadurga Vaaradhi, all others would go back

VIJAYAWADA: A large number of families staying at various relief camps in the city will be returning to their houses from Wednesday, following the recession in the flood discharge downstream of the Prakasam barrage.

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation commissioner Natarajan Gulzar said barring families residing at Padmavathi Ghat and on both sides of Kanakadurga Vaaradhi, whose houses would be inundated even if the flood discharge was just about 2.5 lakh cusecs, all others would be allowed to go back to their houses. Of the seven major camps being run across the city, about four would be closed down by Wednesday morning. As on Tuesday, 4,620 people were still taking shelter in the relief camps.

Mr. Gulzar said the VMC teams would begin enumeration of flood-affected families at their houses using digital cameras.
