Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment and Forest T. Subbarami Reddy on Sunday said a flight to Singapore would be introduced from Visakhapatnam soon after inauguration of Visakhapatnam-Dubai flight service by Air India from March 25.

He told reporters here that due to efforts made by him and the Air Travellers' Association (India), the Union government had agreed to connect Visakhapatnam with Dubai. This was part of efforts made to develop the local airport into an international airport. He said Union Minister for Civil Aviation Ajit Singh would inaugurate the flight to Dubai on March 25.

Mr. Reddy said the promise for international connectivity was made by the then Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel when he attended his birthday bash in the city three years ago.

“Later I followed it up with him, his successors Vayalar Ravi and Mr. Singh,” he said.

He said after the promise made by Union Minister for Tourism Subodh Kant Sahay in September 2011 for sanction of Rs.1,700 crore to develop tourism in the city, he was following it up in New Delhi and exuded confidence that the funds would be released shortly.
