Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) deputy floor leader in the Assembly T. Harish Rao demanded the government to fix a minimum support price of Rs. 2,500 for metric tonne to sugarcane produced as the farmers had invested heavily. Addressing a gathering after participating in a protest programme held at Sangareddy on Thursday, Mr. Harish Rao said that as the investment cost has increased to farmers for cultivating the sugarcane, they have to be paid a reasonable cost. Fixing an investment cost of Rs.1,900 as contemplated by the government would harm the interests of farmers, he said, adding that farmers would be left no option but to commit suicides.
