The Nellore police nabbed a five-member gang and recovered gold jewellery and property worth Rs. 17 lakh from their possession here on Saturday.
The gangsters were found to be old offenders who had served sentences as juvenile offenders at Tirupati Home and Nellore sub-jail in the past.
Superintendent of Police P.V.S. Ramakrishna said that all the gangsters were residents of Nellore city and are related to each other.
The gangsters’ involvement was found to be in over 18 cases of snatching, 10 temple hundi robberies and house-breaking in a few places.
The gangsters committed several offences as juveniles during 2009 and they formed a gang afterwards and started committing offences since 2012 in Nellore city and the surrounding areas.
The offenders were identified as Syed Shabu (20), Sheik Shafi alias Chotu (20), Md Attahar (18), Sk. Salman (19) and Sk. Khaja Garib Nawaz alias Khaja (23).
The arrests were made after a special team under CCS CI Sk. Baji Jan Syeda was formed and searches made under the supervision of Nellore Urban DSP P. Venkatanadha Reddy.
Action plan to prevent such incidents
An action plan has been drawn up to prevent such offences.
Stressing the need for a general alertness among the public, SP Ramakrishna said that people should immediately pass on information to the police when house-breaking and other offences take place.
Business establishments should extend coverage of CCTV up to parking lots and front side of main doors so as to monitor the movement of strangers better.
