Large number of people attend the meeting

VISAKHAPATNAM: Matsyakarula ST Sadhana Samiti on Wednesday criticised the Gangavaram port management and a police officer of Gajuwaka for trying to thwart a meeting held at Gangavaram in memory of Ch. Nookaraju who was killed in police firing a year ago.

Addressing a press conference here, the Samiti convener G. Papa Rao said that the management spread false information through the wife of late Nookaraju that many people were collecting donations and misusing them under the pretext of holding a memorial meeting.

He said the controversial police officer also tried to prevent some political leaders invited to take part at the meeting held on Tuesday. Despite efforts to make it a flop, a large number of people attended the meeting and paid rich tributes to late Nookaraju.

Asked why Mayor Pulusu Janardhana who represents Gangavaram, did not attend the meeting, Mr. Tata Rao said he was not invited as he had become the First Citizen and representative of the entire city.

ST status

Reiterating ST status to fishermen, he said the UPA Government should initiate required legislation for granting ST status to fisherfolk by November 21 - World Fishermen's Day - failing which they would give a call for `Chalo Vizag.'

Mr. Tata Rao said fishermen from all over the State would congregate in the city and take part in a rally to demonstrate their strength. He said the demand for ST status had become an important issue during campaigning for Assembly and Lok Sabha but so far no concrete step had been taken to include fishermen in ST category.
