Fish seedlings were released into river Krishna reservoir at Punnami Ghat upstream of Prakasam Barrage on Saturday as part of ‘Meenotsavam’ organised by the Fisheries Department of State Government.

Krishna district Additional Joint Collector N. Ramesh asked the fisher folk to make use of all schemes being given by the State government to their community to make a descent living. About 14 lakh fish seed would be released into river Krishna and these fish would grow up to 2 kg. within 4 to 6 months, he added.

As part of the State schemes fish seed, net, cycles and other inputs were being given at 50 per cent subsidy to the SC/ST fisher folk. Even ice boxes can be bought for keeping the fish for marketing purpose.

Those using motorised boats are given 300 litres of diesel at Rs.6.03 per litre subsidy for fishing needs, said Deputy Director of Fisheries T. Kalyanam. Shopping complexes can be built in rural areas for fishermen and subsidy is given and panchayats that come forward to give land complex will be built at a cost of Rs.7.5 lakh, he added. Fishermen can make good money in the next six months in the Krishna waters, he said. Fisheries Assistant Director G. Venkata Rao was also present.
