Over two lakh fish seedlings were let into the Gundlakamma reservoir on Friday as part of the ‘Meenotsavam' to augment the income of fishermen in Prakasam district.

Under the first phase of ‘Fingerlings ranching programme' of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), eight lakh fish seedlings would be let into the reservoir, informed State Fisheries Commissioner K. Praveen Kumar while launching the programme.

Under the programme, one-inch fish seedlings supplied by the NFDB were reared up to four inches and let into the reservoir, the Commissioner explained.

“It will be taken up in all the reservoirs in the State in phases for the benefit of fishermen and give a great boost to the State's fish production,” said Mr. Praveen Kumar.

District Collector Kantilal Dande urged fishermen not to catch them before the fish seedlings gained full growth.

The programme, sponsored by the NFDB, is being conducted by the State Fisheries Department.
