HYDERABAD: Fire broke out in an open place on Osmania University campus on Sunday afternoon damaging old answer sheets stored in the valuation centre and a part of the herbal garden, covering more than an acre.
Officials said the flames could have erupted after casual smokers threw a cigarette butt on dry grass accumulated two kilometres away from the valuation centre and subsequently spread to the centre causing damage to previous year’s answer sheets. Answer scripts pertaining to the current year’s under-graduation and post-graduation examinations were also stored in the centre but they were safe, officials said.
No safety measures
After receiving a call around 12.20 p.m., a fire tender, which was stationed at the Election Counting Centre on the campus, rushed to the spot and extinguished flames within an hour. Firemen said that safety measures were not taken to prevent fires at the valuation centre.
OU Vice-Chancellor T. Tirupati Rao, who visited the spot, said that only scrap was gutted in the incident.
