A wildfire on a plot of forest land belonging to the AP Forest Development Corporation (APFDC) behind the Regional Agriculture Research Centre (RARC) at Chintapalli in Visakha Agency area destroyed a large number of medicinal plants and other trees, on Tuesday.
According to reportsreaching here, the fire burnt medicinal plants on a four-acre plot, ‘jaffra’ plants in five acres and eucalyptus trees in 11 acres. The fire which started around 9 a.m., ravaged the area as the Forest Department officials and the locals could not take any measures to control it. The fire finally subsided around 3 p.m. The loss due to fire is yet to be estimated. The Forest Department has no equipment or an action plan to control such fires, felt the locals.
The medicinal plants, ‘jaffra’ and eucalyptus are among the plants and trees the Forest Department is raising all over the Visakha Agency to provide additional income to the Girijan farmers.
