GUNTUR: Devout Christians dressed in their best celebrated the advent of Christ at all churches in Guntur. The celebrations began at midnight on Thursday at Phirangipuram, West Parish, North Parish and St. Ignatius churches, where special mass was organised. People lighted candles at all the churches and greeted each other. People returned home after two hours of midnight mass.
They came back on Friday for special prayers at 10 a.m. and listened to the messages of Father Thomas and Father Raja Reddy at North Parish church. For people of Phirangipuram, Christmas was a ‘big feast’. People of different faiths in the town had been contributing to the feast since the church was built in 1893 by Rev. Fr. Dickman, a Milhill Missionary.
The seat of Guntur Diocese Bishop Gali Bali began the festivities from here at midnight.
In his message at North Parish, the Father, narrating the story of Jesus, said there were messengers who spread the news of the birth of Jesus, and likened the present-day cellphones to the messengers of those days. He, however, cautioned the public against the over use of cellphones.
Bala Yesu churches and St. Ignatius church in the city were also centres of activity along with West Parish church, where thousands of devotees gathered to offer prayers.
