Devotees throng Siva temples

Mahasivaratri was celebrated with traditional enthusiasm and religious fervour across Prakasam district on Sunday.

Special pujas were performed to Chandrasekara by devotees who observed fast, performed Bhajans and maintained night-long vigil for 'Lingodbhava' darshan of Lord Someswara.

With “Om Namasivaya'' on thier lips, devotees waiting in serpentine queues, in among other places, Bhairavakona, the abode of fiery form of Siva Bhairava, Tripurantakam, the eastern gateway to Srisailam and Jambulapalem with 1,116 Sivalingas.

Priests from Srisailam performed Mahanyasapurvaka Ekadasa Rudra Abhishekam to the divine couple at Tripurantakam. Yerragondapalem MLA A.Suresh and Giddalur MLA Anna Rambabu joined the thousands of devotees in offering worship to Sasisekhara, said M.Sadanandam, Assistant Executive Officer, the Srisailam temple Devasthanam, which manages the temple.

Continuing the tradition, 68-year-old handloom weaver Prudhivi Venkateswarulu from Hastinamapuram hamlet near Chirala got the privilege of decorating Lord Siva with specially woven cloth for the ‘Kalyanotsavam' for the 46th year in succession at Srisailam this year also, after his father and grandfather, Mr Sadanandam added.

Ongole MP Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy, Kanigiri MLA M Ugranarasimha Reddy were among those who had darshan of Lord Siva who appears in eight forms - Shashinaga, Rudra, Visweswara, Nagarikeswara, Bhargeswara, Rameswara, Mallikarjuna and Pakshamalika Linga -- at Bhairavakona, an archaeologists delight.

Tens and thousands of people visited the Ramalingeswara Swamy temple at Pothirala near Chinnaganjam.

Union Minister of State for Petroleum Panabaka Lakshmi, tollywood actors Suman and Siva Reddy, Galaxy granite baron and Congress leader P.Anand were among those who offered worship to Ramalingeswara Swamy.

Pathala Nageswaraswamy temple at Giddalur, Ramakoteswaraswamy temple at Chinnaganjam, Lingodbhava Swamy temple at

Chadalawada and the Ganga Bhramaramba Sameta Malleswara Swamy temple at Manikeswaram.

People waited in long queues also at Kasivisveswara Swamy temple at Chennakesavapet here, Mahasahasralinga Sameta Dwadasa Jyothirlinga Kshetram at Santapet here and Bramarambha Sameta Pasupati temple on the banks of Rangarayudu Chervu here.

Theerthala Jatara begins fanfare

The annual religious fair Theerthala Jatara got off to a religious start on the occasion of Mahasivaratri in Khammam rural mandal on Sunday. A host of special pujas and rituals were performed at the famous Sangameshwara Swamy temple in the village on the inaugural day of the annual religious fair. Scores of devotees worshipped Lord Sangameshwara on the occasion of Sivaratri festival.

The temple situated close to the confluence of Munneru, Buggeru and Akeru rivers, reverberated with “Om Namaha Sivaya” chants even as the devotees made a beeline to the shrine. Minister for Horticulture R Venkat Reddy and others visited the religious fair. Meanwhile, Mahasivaratri was celebrated with religious fervour at the famous Siva temples in Khammam, Kusumanchi, Chandrugonda, Penuballi, Madhira, Burgumpadu, Kothagudem, and other mandals across the district.

Devotional programmes were also conducted in several temples as part of Sivaratri festivities till late Sunday night. Annadanam, a poor feeding programme, was conducted at Vasavi Arya Vysya Kalyana Mandapam in Madhira. Deputy Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka participated in special religious rituals at Sri Mrutyunjaya Swamy temple in Madhira.
