Perturbed over the alleged shortage of gunny bags and other hurdles in disposing of their paddy produce, the agitated farmers took to the streets and staged road blockade at several places in the district on Wednesday.

The farmers blocked the Bhadrachalam-Vijayawada highway by placing paddy produce on the middle of the road at V M Banjara village in Penuballi mandal in the afternoon. They raised slogans resenting the alleged apathy of the officials concerned in redressing their grievances and providing the much-needed amenities at the paddy purchase centres.

Sattupalli MLA S Venkata Veeraiah of the TDP also participated in the protest demonstration. He alleged that the government had failed to set up the required number of paddy purchase centres and provide basic facilities at the existing centres. The acute shortage of gunny bags has adversely affected the paddy procurement in some centres and brought the activity to a standstill in some others, he charged and demanded that the government initiate urgent steps to ensure supply of adequate number of gunny bags and prompt procurement of the entire paddy produce of the farmers at minimum support price.

Meanwhile, the farmers also staged similar agitations in Bayyaram, Kusumanchi, and several other mandals in the district on Wednesday.
