Vexed with the continuing power shortage, which has cast a shadow on Kharif crop, farmers staged dharnas and rasta rokos in different districts.

Officials of the power utilities were gheraoed in several districts while irate farmers pelted stones on the sub-stations in some places. Farmers in Kurnool district blocked traffic movement on the busy highway for a couple of hours in protest against the government’s “indifference” in addressing their grievances.

Residents of Sirivel in Kurnool district stormed the electrical sub-station and resorted to violence on Friday night in protest against the erratic power supply situation during the Ramzan month. A large number of villagers and farmers who gathered at the sub-station entered into an altercation with officials concerned who were later chased away.

Electricity sub-stations were locked in Tirumalagiri and Miryalagudem mandals of Nalgonda districts while a section of farmers staged rasta roko on Narketpalli-Addanki highway disrupting the traffic. Farmers locked officials inside a sub-station at Mirdoddi mandal of Medak district while industrialists of Patancheru area in the same district staged dharna in front of the AP Transco office demanding steps to lift power cuts failing which the industries would be forced to declare a lockout.

Clarification sought

A delegation of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti legislators called on AP Power Generation Corporation Chairman and Managing Director seeking clarification on government’s stand on providing seven-hour uninterrupted power supply to farm sector. The MLAs led by T. Harish Rao wanted the power utility to make public the power purchase agreements it signed with private developers including the Lanco Industries. Weavers in Gangadhara mandal of Karimnagar district locked officials inside a sub-station in protest against the power cuts that was affecting operation of powerlooms. They wanted the government to implement a special package, on the lines of the one in Sircilla, to rescue weavers who were suffering hardships.

Officials were gheraoed in Siddhavatam of YSR Kadapa district and Santamagulur of Prakasam district while mild tension prevailed in Nakarikallu mandal of Guntur district where farmers resorted to stone pelting on the sub-station in protest against the unscheduled power cuts.

Farmers and TDP activists staged a rasta roko at Manganur village of Bijinepally mandal disrupting traffic for over two hours. They laid siege to the Transco office at Jadcharla demanding uninterrupted power supply.
