Four unidentified persons attacked and injured seriously former sarpanch G. Lakshmaiah while he was sleeping in his house at Peddamalavaripalle village in Yellanur mandal on early Thursday.
Yellanur sub inspector G. Niranjan Reddy said unidentified persons barged into the Telugu Desam Party leader's house and attacked him with sickles. They escaped even as the family members shouted for help.
He said Lakshmaiah's relative Srinivasulu Naidu of Gooty was accused in Telugu Desam activist Rafi's murder that took place six months ago. Rafi's family members often used to pressurise Lakshmaiah to take action against Srinivasulu Naidu. The police presumed that Rafi's relatives might have attacked Lakshmaiah as the latter did not pay attention to their pleas.
Lakshamiah was admitted to government hospital in Kurnool and his condition was said to be critical. The police registered a case and were investigating.
