It is being organised by Navy Wives Welfare Association
A good collection of handloom weaves in beautiful block prints, eco-friendly curtains, cotton saris, kurtis and dupattas, bed linen, table-runners, cushion covers and many more are sure to draw the attention of the ardent shoppers at the exhibition organised by Navy Wives Welfare Association, Eastern Region (NWWA).
The three wings of NWWA – Udyogika, Pragati Welfare Group and Samudri Shop – will display a range of household products, most of which are designed by the wives of naval sailors. Items created by special children of Navy School – Sankalp – will also be on display at the three-day exhibition.
Ragini Chopra, president of NWWA and wife of Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, was chief guest of the preview of the expo. She said that it was a great opportunity for women to learn the traditional art and become independent. “We want to keep our Indian tradition and culture alive apart from empowering women and provide them required opportunity on how to present their products in the market,” she said.
Sling bags, stylish mobile pouches, terracotta accessories, paper bags, candle-stands, Shantiniketan leather crafts and jute bags also form part of the expo.
Speaking on the occasion here on Tuesday, Seema Verma, wife of Chief of Staff ENC Vice-Admiral B.K. Verma and group coordinator of Udyogika, said the basic idea was to empower women.
“Naval officers’ wives are the volunteers of the association and we help in providing platform to exhibit the products of the sailors’ wives. The art also helps them set up business when they go back to their villages post retirement,” she added.
Shruti Seshadri, wife of district Collector V. Sheshadri, was among those who participated in the preview programme. The three-day exhibition will be on from Thursday at Hotel Palm Beach between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
