The Sattupalli police nabbed D. Jeevarathnam, one of the 11 inmates who escaped from the Hyderabad-based Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in the small hours of Tuesday, near Betupalli village in Sattupalli mandal on Wednesday.

According to the police, Jeevarathnam, an undertrial prisoner in a murder case, was apprehended on the outskirts of Betupalli late in the afternoon.

Jeevarathnam was traced by the police based on specific information given by the local people that he was seen heading towards his native place Kistapuram in the same mandal.

The police said that Jeevarathnam was involved in the murder of a woman at Kistapuram more than three years ago. He was subsequently lodged in Warangal central jail from where he was referred to the criminal ward of IMH in Hyderabad a few months ago.

A sigh of relief

The villagers, particularly the witnesses those who reportedly deposed against Jeevarathnam during the trial in the woman’s murder case, heaved a sigh of relief following his capture by the police.

“We will hand over him to the city police,” said Venkanna Babu, Circle-Inspector, Sattupalli town.
