Kakinada: The district police have launched a special drive to discipline autorickshaw drivers. The police are also sensitising them to the need to adhere to traffic rules, avoid overloading and over speed, which are major factors leading to accidents. Launched a couple of days ago in Peddapuram sub division followed by Amalapuram and Rajahmundry sub divisions, the drive is currently on in Kakinada sub division.

"Till August 31, the focus will be on counselling the drivers. Later, cases will be booked and heavy compounding fee levied on erring drivers. Licences will be kept in abeyance," East Godavari SP Battini Srinivasulu told The Hindu on Wednesday. Expressing concern over spurt in road accidents involving autorickshaws, he said strict enforcement was the only way to put an end to the trend.
