Minister for Roads and Buildings Pithani Satyanarayana has asked officials of the department to take up repairs to the rail-cum-road bridge across the river Godavari at Rajahmundry immediately and report the matter to him every month.
He inspected the bridge on Tuesday along with senior engineers of R and B department and latter reviewed the immediate measures required for the bridge at R and B guesthouse at Rajahmundry.
During the meeting the senior engineers of the department and officials of railway department narrated the minister that the bridge was constructed during the year 1974 and repairs were done during the years 1994 and 2005. But, the crocodile joints that were arranged between the columns on the bridge were frequently damaged as a result of regular moment of the trains on the bridge and cracks were developing in joints because of heavy vibrations from train moment. They also said that during the year 2010 the joints were also repaired, taking the expert opinion, using micro concrete to strengthen the joints spending Rs.20 lakhs.
In this connection the Minister said that experts would be consulted for permanent measures for strengthening of joints duly following the main designs of the bridge. Rajahmundry MLA Rowthu Suryapraksa Rao, Rajanagaram MLA P. Venkatesh, Prathipadu MLA P. Chittibabu, Pithapuram MLA Vanga Geetha, DCCB chairman Satyanarayana Reddy and Chief Engineers of R and B department G. Jagannada Rao and Krishna Reddy, and Superintendent Engineer C.S. Murthy attended the review meeting.
