An engineering student, Mounika, 21, leapt to death from the second floor of the college building minutes after a lecturer chided the students over low marks scored by them in an exam on Saturday at Keesara.

The student was rushed to a nearby hospital with injuries and died while undergoing treatment, the Alwal ACP, Ganesh Reddy, said. A resident of A.S. Rao Nagar, Mounika was in second year of engineering course in information technology in Geetanjali engineering college at Cheeryala of Keesara.

She and many of her classmates got less marks in a subject in the recently held exam. While they were attending the practical session in the college laboratory on ground floor, a woman lecturer took the students to task stating that they failed to focus on the subject. “Minutes later, Mounika stepped out of the classroom saying she wanted to collect her bag. She went up to the second floor and jumped,” the ACP said. The student’s mother, Padma, in her complaint, said her daughter was dejected over securing less marks in an exam and ended her life.
