Balaji Naidu posed as the project director of RYK

An engineering graduate, Balaji Naidu, alias Koteswara Rao, and his wife Dariabi were arrested by the Narsapur police in West Godavari district on Wednesday on the charge of cheating the local legislator, Mudunuru Prasada Raju, who is now sailing with the YSR Congress Party.

The arrest was made on a complaint lodged by Rudraraju Srinivasa Varma, personal assistant of the MLA. According to Narsapur DSP Mahendrapatrudu, Balaji Naidu posed as the project director of the government-sponsored Rajiv Yuva Kiranalu scheme which is aimed at promotion of self-employment, and allegedly duped the MLA.

The police recovered Rs 32,000 in cash from him.

‘Registration fee'

Mr. Varma said he had credited an amount of Rs. 56,000 into an account opened by the accused towards ‘registration fee' for financial assistance to jobless youths under the scheme on behalf of the MLA following a false promise from the accused.

Naidu allegedly offered help to the MLA in ratifying the list of his own candidates provided the latter paid him the registration fee. Enquiries by the police revealed that it all was a fraud and the so-called project director was a conman.

Balaji Naidu reportedly collected huge amounts of money from not less than 10 MLAs in Coastal Andhra and even in Telangana in the name of registration fee. His ability to speak good English and Telugu came in handy to convince them.

The DSP said the accused also made an attempt to deceive another two MLAs but they approached the Superintendent of Police, C. Ravi Varma.

Meanwhile, a couple of police constables in the district were also said to have walked into the trap laid by Balaji Naidu.
