An effigy of Narakasura, the symbol of evil, was set on fire at V.T. Colony by members of the Hanuman Seva Samithi and several youth organisations on the second day of Deepavali here on Thursday.

The day also marked the commencement of holy ‘Kartikamasam'. To mark the day, devotees offered special poojas in several temples in the town.

A large number of Ayyappa ‘bhaktas' undertook the 40-day ‘deeksha', at the end of which they visit the shrine in Kerala.

Pomp and gaiety marked the celebration of the Festival of Lights though on a restrained note on Wednesday, in view of the tight budget of the employees, many of whom were handicapped by non-receipt of salary for the 42-day ‘Sakala Janula Samme', as also drought in many mandals.
