VIJAYAWADA: Activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) burnt an effigy of the `caste demon' to register their protest against the arrest of activists going to Hyderabad as part of `Chalo Assembly' programme, near Raghavaiah Park on Tuesday. CPI(M) district secretary V. Umamaheswara Rao set ablaze the effigy.

Addressing the party activists, Mr. Rao said caste discrimination continued in different forms even after the country got its independence.

He said CPI(M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu, who ended his fast in the day, was demanding welfare schemes for the uplift of dalits in the State. CPI(M) activists going to participate in a `Chalo Assembly' programme on Tuesday were forced to alight from trains and arrested, he said.

He said the State Government should take steps to protect dalits from 58 different types of caste discrimination. He urged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to take out a `dalit batta' on the lines of `palle batta' and `nagara batta' to learn the problems of the dalits in the State first hand.
