TIRUPATI: Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development D. Purandeswari, has termed education as the only weapon that empowers women and rescues them from the clutches of discrimination, both at home and in the society at large.

Realising that the legal system is grossly insufficient to tame the menace, the Centre has allocated exclusive funds for women’s education in the 11th Five Year Plan, she said.

The Minister was speaking after laying the foundation stone for a second women’s hostel building in the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha campus here on Tuesday. In spite of scores of laws, women’s discrimination was going on she lamented, saying “laws against sex determination test on foetus, dowry and domestic violence are followed more in breach and the discrimination (of women) is going on unabated.”

Referring to Sanskrit as the ‘mother of all languages’, she observed that a huge chunk of the 2,200 Asian languages had disappeared without a trace, while Sanskrit managed to remain in its pristine form through the 2000 odd years.

The Minister agreed with the other speakers on the need to promote and propagate the language in a big way. MLA M.Venkataramana, Registrar A. Gurumurti, Pankaj T. Chande, chairman of UGC peer team were among those present.
