HYDERABAD: An energy efficient charger for all mobile phones will be launched shortly. The introduction of the new universal charging solution would reduce 13.6 million tonne of carbon emission each year and standardisation of the technology would enable the same charger to be used for all future handsets irrespective of their model, cutting down on the number of chargers produced and shipped.
This was stated by International Telecommunication Union secretary general Hamadoun Toure here on Monday while elaborating on the environment friendly nature of information and communication technology. He said the financial meltdown had not touched the telecom sector which had registered a significant growth.
“There was tremendous reduction in budget relating to transportation and other sectors. But there has been no reduction in communication budget and nobody has given up mobile phones,” Mr. Toure said.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Toure said the communication sector had, in fact, acted as a saviour during recession as it enabled video-conference and tele-presence cutting down costs. “This has yet again proved that ICT sector is not part of the problem, but is, rather, a part of the solution,” he added.
