The annual jatara mahotsavam of Goddess Durgalamma will be held at the temple premises near Poorna Market from March 9 to 17.

Government Whip Dronamraju Srinivas and his wife will offer prayers on March 9 to mark the inauguration of the festival.

The ‘utsava murthis’ of the deity will be taken out in a procession on the streets, according to the temple Executive Officer K. Sirisha.

Mahasivarathri celebrations would be conducted in a grand manner on March 10 with ‘netrotsavam’ and ‘tholi puja’ being performed at midnight. Kumkumarchana, sulala panduga and agnigundam (devotees stamping on burning coal) would be performed as part of the jatara mahotsavam of the Goddess from March 10, she told a media conference on Thursday.

The festivities would conclude with ‘anna danam’ on March 17. Ms. Sirisha noted that over 1.5 lakh devotees were expected to attend the festival.

An amount of Rs.1.25 lakh would be spent for organising the festival and the returns were estimated to be around Rs.3 lakh.

The annual revenue of the temple was Rs.33.5 lakh. She appealed to devotees to participate in large numbers and make the programme a success.
