KURNOOL: Tuberculosis is a problem of society, Dr. G. Kullayappa, retired professor of Chest Diseases said. Addressing a meeting in connection with the World T.B. Day here on Monday, he said every TB patient infected 20 healthy persons during disease period. Of them, two developed tuberculosis.

He called upon families, NGOs and community leaders to take up the responsibility of motivating the patients to undergo complete medical course. He said if the patient would be completely cured of the disease the medicines were used for six months without break.

He said the Directly Observed Treatment Short Course (DOTS) was very effect in tackling the problem of tuberculosis. A total of five lakh people died of tuberculosis in the country every year.

A free TB camp was conducted on the occasion and 100 patients were given medicines free of cost.

The officials of TB control project and nursing students took out a rally to bring awareness about the disease in society.
