To create an awareness on environment and its conservation among young people on the occasion of Earth Day, representatives of the Movement for People Centred Development (MPCD) flagged off a campaign here on Thursday. The campaign would conclude in Tuni in East Godavari district. A team of 10 members of the committee had taken the initiative to address the issues and create awareness among people with slogans and posters.
“We have arranged a vehicle for our 130-km campaign and committee members will be joining us from respective places,” said an MPCD committee member J.V. Ratnam.
Global warming, water contamination, air pollution, industrial pollution, and use of plastics, among others, are leading to irreversible loss to our ecosystems and biodiversity. Though people have been observing World Earth Day for the last four decades, not many issues have been solved. “With the campaign, we want people to wake up to the issues and fight together to protect our environs,” he explained. The committee members said that the government should support 100 per cent where implementation of Environment Protection Act was concerned and politicians should make it an agenda to take measures to protect the earth before it turned out to be a global disaster. Representatives of various environmental activists would also take part in the campaign. A meeting would be held at Visakhapatnam Public Library on Sunday at 9 a.m.
