HYDERABAD: A toddler was mauled to death by a stray dog at his house near Hi-Tec City on Sunday.

Thirteen-months-old Gopal was sleeping when the dog entered his house at around 6.30 p.m. and attacked him. The dog ran away when his uncle Kedernath Balu came in and found the child with bleeding injuries. Balu shifted the boy to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. The incident occurred when Gopal’s mother Sakri went to purchase vegetables, said Madhapur Sub-Inspector M. Ramulu. He said the dog later attacked two girls Bheemma and Supria while playing near their residences at Khannenmet.

According to police, the boy’s parents – Anogath Bathia and Sakri – came to the city six years ago from their native Pedamul village in Ranga Reddy district and were residing at Hi-Tec City. Bathia is working as an auto driver.Police registered a case and shifted the body to the Osmania general hospital mortuary for conducting an autopsy. In May 2007, a new-born baby was also killed in a similar manner at Ziaguda.

GHMC Chief Veterinary Officer P. Venkateswar Reddy said special drives were being conducted to contain the menace. “We are facing stiff resistance from a few NGOs to kill strays. In such a scenario, how can we control this problem?” he asked.
