TIRUPATI: A video documentary on ‘Tirupati Ganga Jatara' was released by Sri Venkateswara University Vice-Chancellor N. Prabhakara Rao in the temple premises here on Friday.

The video was a result of painstaking research by Peta Srinivasulu Reddy, a professor of Telugu at SVU, who has authored several books in the past on Tirumala, Tirupati and its folk festivals.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Rao called ‘Jatara' a famous festival in the entire State, with its uniqueness lying in the donning of various guises by the public, who roam around the town saying offensive and abusive words on the passersby.

He lauded Prof. Reddy and a computer expert V.V.V. Ramana for bringing out the documentary, which he said, would further spread the fame of the goddess and the fete. N. Sakuntala, the Vice-Chancellor's spouse, formally handed over the disc to the temple authorities.

Prof. Reddy said the ‘boothu paatalu', as the songs containing the foul words are collectively referred to as, had been passed on for generations and were hence a treasured possession for the native residents of Tirupati.

Thathayagunta temple Executive Officer J. Ekambaram assured steps to publicise the video among devotees and researchers. SVU Photographer Gandhi Babu also took part.
