A diphtheria case was officially confirmed on Monday after several cases of the killer disease that were reported in the recent past turned out to be negative.

The State Reference Laboratory at Guntur Medical College ascertained that 8-year-old P. Manisha of Kotagadda village in Gurazala mandal is afflicted with diphtheria.

She has a membrane formed on tonsils and in posterior part of the throat.

It is this membrane that aggravates the upper respiratory tract infection which may prove to be fatal if not properly treated.

‘Four cases'

Four persons have reportedly died due to diphtheria in the last few months but none of them was confirmed to be victims of the disease.

District Medical & Health Officer M. Gopi Naik told The Hindu that the girl's family had recently migrated from Maharashtra where she was administered booster dose of the vaccine at the age of five. But the immunisation has apparently failed.

She is now undergoing treatment at the Fever Hospital here.
