Activists of the SFI town committee staged a demonstration in front of the Naya Bazaar Government High School here on Thursday protesting against the dilapidated condition of a portion of the old school building.
The protesters squatted at the entrance of the school here in the afternoon as a mark of protest against the “official apathy” towards the plight of the schoolchildren. They shouted slogans denouncing the alleged sorry state of affairs in the school. The student activists pointed out cracks in the walls and leaky roofs in some classrooms when a team of officials visited the school late in the afternoon. SFI town committee secretary Ramesh apprised the officials of the plight of the schoolchildren particularly the girl students due to the pathetic condition of the old school building and lack of basic amenities like toilets. He lamented that the students of some sections of the high school were attending classes under constant fear of building collapse.
The agitators blamed the school headmaster for allegedly remaining insensitive to the woes of the schoolchildren. District Educational Officer K Ravindranath Reddy intervened and told them that alternative arrangements were already made to shift English medium sections to the safe rooms within the building complex. He further assured them that vacant rooms, if any, in the nearby government junior college building or other suitable locations in government institutions would be identified to operate some of the sections of the high school, until new building is constructed.
