The Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India and other Left parties demanded that the Central government withdraw its decision to allow foreign direct investment in multi-brand retail.

Leaders and activists of the Left parties staged demonstrations in front of outlets of retail giant Walmart in different parts of the State in protest against the Centre’s decision. They said the decision would hit scores of petty traders engaged in retail trade as well as people.

Dharnas were held at the Best Price stores in the State capital, Vijayawada, Guntur, Rajahmundry and Tirupati. CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu and his CPI counterpart K. Narayana led the agitators at the Best Price outlet at Rajendranagar on the city outskirts.

The police resorted to lathicharge at Rajendranagar to disperse the agitators while the leaders were arrested in some other places.
