Director General of Police B. Prasada Rao on Sunday sought to play down the Maoist problem in the State. “Bifurcation or no bifurcation of the State, the State police are quite capable of handling Left wing extremism,” he said while addressing a media conference.

Mr. Rao was here to take stock of the preparedness of the district police in conducting the upcoming general elections at a review meeting with senior police officers from Eluru range.

Mr. Rao declined to comment on whether the bifurcation would lead to an escalation of the Maoist problem in the newly created Telangana State. He clarified that in a report which he submitted to the Union Ministry, he had only sought additional machinery to contain the Maoist problem. The DGP said that he requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) for deployment of additional forces to conduct the general elections in a smooth and fair manner while expressing hope that his request would be conceded. The DGP said he was making special efforts to equip the police ranks at the district level to deal with cyber offences.
