The number of sunstroke deaths since April 1 has risen to 231 in Prakasam district, even as depression in the Bay of Bengal on Thursday brought respite to people reeling under sweltering heat for several days at a stretch.

The heat wave abated with the formation of a weather system in the Bay, revenue officials said.

The sky remained overcast all through the day bringing down the maximum temperature to 38 deg C on Thursday from the peak level of 45 deg C for many days last week, as the condition was favourable for early southwest monsoon rains.

The city experienced a few spells of showers bringing down the minimum temperature by six deg C to 28 deg C.
