2,213 candidates taking entrance exam
Many students are keen on pursuing polytechnic courses, thanks to job opportunities compared to engineering graduates. As many as 2,213 candidates will be taking the entrance examination on May 2 at 16 centres identified in Srikakulam and Tekkali towns, according to coordinators of the examination K. Prasad and M.A.V. Ramakrishna and admission in-charge K. Sivakumar. Previously, only 1,500 to 1,800 students used to appear for the examination. Results will be out on May 17 and counselling will begin on June 6.
Many parents are encouraging their children to study three-year polytechnic diploma course since they can learn basics perfectly in various courses, including electrical, mechanical, civil, and computer sciences. Many industries are offering jobs to the students who gain skills in respective courses. There are seven polytechnic colleges in Srikakulam district and two more will function from Tekkali and Seethampet from 2013-14 academic year.
Major Sivakumar told The Hindu that the demand for polytechnic courses had gone up significantly in the entire State this year. “Many industries are specifically issuing job notifications to recruit only polytechnic diploma holders. It is a good sign for students of poor and backward classes also ,” he added.
