Decks are cleared for setting up a modern abattoir with the final few stages of processing in the pipeline.
A project management unit has been set up. It recently visited the city and saw the site and obtained the no objection certificate of the AP Pollution Control Board.
Reacting to a report that appeared in these columns on Friday, Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana said only the final approval by the Central Sanctioning Committee under the Ministry of Food Processing was awaited with the other processes completed. The final nod by the committee will set the ball rolling for initiating the process of setting up the abattoir. The much-delayed modern abattoir will now come up on public private participation on six acres of land. The Centre will sanction Rs.15 crore and the private participant will invest another Rs.15 crore.
The modern abattoir is expected to put an end to unauthorised slaughter in the city that the corporation is unable to control owing to paucity of staff and stretch of the city as well as running manual slaughter houses, the main one being at Hanumanthavaka.
