Uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension continue to remain the two prime reasons for causing Chronic Kidney Diseases (CKD).

Patients with CKD are left with no option but to depend on dialysis and wait for donor organs for transplantation. Often enough, the waiting period for a donor organ transplant is uncertain, involves a lot of waiting and may end in disappointment.

So how does one deal with such eventualities?

Nephrologists say diabetics and hypertensive patients should give importance to preventive measures. With the twin cities having a large population of diabetics, doctors feel that it is imperative for high-risk groups to be cautious and diligent in taking preventive measures.

“In India, five lakh patients are on dialysis and need kidney transplantation. There are approximately 20,000 patients requiring a kidney transplant annually but only about 700 undergo the procedure due to shortage. The gap between the demand and supply is yawning and it will take a lot of time to bridge it. Therefore, it’s very important to talk frequently about preventive aspects of CKD,” says director of the Nephrology division at Care Hospitals, Rajasekhara Chakravarthi.

Senior nephrologists from the hospital interacted with presspersons on Wednesday to announce that the hospital had reached a landmark 256 kidney transplants in nine years, with a success rate of 95 per cent. “The advent of innovative technology and medicines has improved the success rate of organ transplants. However, public should keep in mind that prevention is always better than cure,” said Head of Nephrology P. Vikranth Reddy.

Lifestyle changes suggested

The doctors suggested lifestyle changes including being more active, keeping sugar and blood pressure levels under control, frequent monitoring, changes in eating habits and keeping away from frequent use of painkillers as preventive measures from kidney ailments.
