Perturbed over alleged dowry harassment by her husband, a 30-year-old dalit woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well at Rajugudem village in Vemsur mandal late on Wednesday night.

The victim was identified as R Dhanamma, a farm labourer of Rajugudem. According to sources, Dhanamma jumped into a well situated in the rear side of their house around midnight on Wednesday. Her body was found in the well in the early hours of Thursday.

It is suspected that she resorted to the drastic step unable to cope with the constant harassment by her husband Krishnaiah for additional dowry. She is survived by four children including three daughters, sources added.

Yesu, the father of the deceased, lodged a complaint against his son-in-law Krishnaiah and the latter's mother Chimpiramma with the Vemsur police. In his complaint, he accused Krishnaiah of torturing his daughter for additional dowry and driving her to suicide. The incident triggered strong protest from villagers.
