The reported death of a remand prisoner, Muniyappa (39) during his transit from Chittoor Government Hospital to SVRR Hospital, Tirupati, on Wednesday has come in for sharp attack from the Chittoor district unit of the A.P. Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC).

The district convener of the APCLC, Kumar, has in a statement charged that it was only because of the alleged physical and mental ‘police torture' that the remand prisoner breathed his last even as he was being brought to the Tirupati hospital from Chittoor after his condition reportedly turned critical.

The statement also alleged that the deceased along with his three brothers were arrested by the Palamaner police in August last in connection with a brawl at the local bus station and were remanded to custody after beating them black and blue and implicating them in ‘false cases'. The APCLC convener further alleged that as Muniyappa refused to accept the ‘false cases', the police allegedly tortured him further leading eventually to his ‘ill health' and his subsequent hospitalisation under critical condition.

As such, the APCLC demanded criminal case against all the policemen concerned besides withdrawal of the ‘false cases' booked against the brothers of the deceased.
