VIJAYAWADA: Crushed sugarcane kept ready for transportation to a paper mill was gutted on the premises of Delta Sugar Factory at Hanuman Junction in Krishna district on Wednesday. Fire engines from Hanuman Junction, Gannavaram, Nuzvid, Gudivada and Eluru rushed to the spot to put out the fire, but the fire continued till evening.
District Fire Officer M. Murali Mohan said a call was received from the factory at 12.30 p.m. and fire tenders were rushed there immediately.
The fire tenders found crushed sugarcane waste piled in heaps of 15 metres of height and 20 metres of width in a 20-acre site. The waste in about 10 acres was on fire when the fire tenders reached the factory.
The fire officer said that the factory management had claimed that sparks from electricity wires that were short-circuited was the source of the fire. The value of the material was estimated to be Rs. 4 crores.
