Agitator Srinivasa Rao, who was hurt in the rail roko on Tuesday, dies

Students take over mantle from leaders and continue dharnas and fasts

GUNTUR: The movement for a unified Andhra Pradesh that began three days ago in Guntur district saw fissures in the Joint Action Committee of political parties on Wednesday after Telugu Desam Party leader Kodela Siva Prasada Rao criticised AICC president Sonia Gandhi for conceding to the creation of Telangana.

The Congress leaders boycotted the proposed rally of 5,000 students and deserted the camp for two hours led by DCC president Singam Basavapunnaiah, but they relented and joined the TDP cadre to continue the agitation. The lawyers’ community also got divided over continuing the agitation.

An agitator, P. Srinivasa Rao, who was injured in the rail roko programme on Tuesday, died in the Government General Hospital on Wednesday morning.

The college and school students, however, took over the mantle from the political leaders and continued dharna and fast in the city and at Acharya Nagarjuna University. .

At Acharya Nagarjuna University, the students of JAC continued their fast for the third day and a street play was enacted on National Highway No.5. They also blocked the traffic on the highway for more than an hour before the Superintendent of Police S.B. Bagchi and Collector B. Ramanjaneyulu ordered their removal. In Guntur city GVSR College students took out a torch rally from Brundavan Gardens Centre to Sankar Vilas Centre.
