To mount pressure on State to complete irrigation schemes

Reiterating his party’s resolve to bring public issues to the centre stage of political arena for finding tangible solutions to people’s problems, CPI(M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu said the party would spearhead a 12-day “Saagu Neeti Sadhana Maha Padayatra” in the district from October 28 to espouse the cause of farmers.

Addressing the district plenum of the party here on Sunday, Mr Raghavulu said the State government was making all out efforts to construct Polavaram project in its original design unmindful of its serious repercussions on lakhs of tribal people and their natural habitat besides wildlife and biodiversity.

The CPI (M) was of the firm opinion that the government should explore the alternative designs suggested by some irrigation experts to avoid large-scale displacement of the tribal people and make the project mutually beneficial. The party’s upcoming ‘maha padayatra’ involving 1,000 volunteers was intended to mount pressure on the government to take urgent measures to complete the long pending Rajiv Sagar (Dummugudem) and Indira Sagar (Rudramkota) lift irrigation schemes as well as establish public sector steel plant at Bayyaram in the district, he said.

It would also mobilise public opinion to pressurise the government shelve the Dummugudem-Nagarjunasagar Tail Pond Link Canal Project which posed a serious threat to the interests of the farmers in the district, he said. Mr. Raghavulu said the CPI (M) would undertake struggles against anti-people policies of the government.
