Police arrested 19 leaders and cadres of CPI(M), including 12 women, when they laid a siege to Vidyut Bhavan at Dasannapeta here on Saturday in protest against increase in power tariff. The arrested include district committee leaders Reddy Sankar Rao, T.V. Ramana, M. Durga Rao and M. Chitti Thalli. They were released on personal surety by the II Town police. Mr. Sankar Rao said the Congress in its election manifesto had mentioned that it would not increase power tariff till 2014 but it went back on its assurance and imposed an additional burden of Rs. 500 crore on people. Akin to the agitation in the year 2000 on the increase in power tariff, the party would continue it until the government rolled back the hike.

At Parvathipuram, the party cadres staged protest demonstrations against the increase in front of sub-station at Belgaum and burnt an effigy of the government.
