The CPI(M) has taken exception to the statement of AP Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC) Managing Director Mukesh Kumar Meena that cancellation of bauxite mining leases would mean a huge loss.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, CPI(M) district secretary Ch. Narasinga Rao demanded dismissal of Mr. Meena for siding with the mining companies while neglecting the interests of the poor tribal people. While the tribal people were waging relentless battles against mining for the last few years, the APMDC favouring the mining companies was ridiculous.

Bauxite mining would result in destruction of crops in thousands of acres, pollution of drinking water, destruction of forests and the environment.

The lifestyle of tribal people in other places, where bauxite mining was done, has not improved and they had lost their livelihood.

The contaminated drinking water sources on the hills would also contaminate the water sources in the plains.

Mr. Narasinga Rao alleged that the APMDC MD had issued laterite and calcite mining licences on benami names to influential persons in Nathavaram and Anantagiri mandals.

He said a dharna would be organised at the APMDC office in the city on Monday to protest against the statements issued by the MD in support of bauxite mining companies.
