ELURU: The Collectorate on Wednesday witnessed a showdown between the police and the CPI(M) activists during a protest on various public issues.
The protesters descended on the venue early in the morning and laid siege to all entry points in a bid to paralyse the functioning of the Collectorate.
A large posse of police, armed with guns and canes, was positioned to face any eventuality. When the agitators tried to gatecrash into the Collectorate and prevent the employees from attending to duties, the police used force and arrested 250 functionaries belonging to various outfits affiliated to the CPI(M) such as the CITU, the AIDWA, the DYFI, the SFI, the Andhra Pradesh Rytu Sangham and the Girijana Sangham.
The picketing was part of a State-wide call to highlight the party’s charter of demands seeking separate allocations for uplifting the poor, land to the landless, house sites to the urban and rural poor, etc.
Handling of women protesters by the police drew flak from the CPI(M). Male personnel allegedly removed them instead of female personnel in violation of the norms.
District Secretariat member of the party K. Rajaramamohan Roy charged the male police personnel with misbehaving with women protesters. A protest demonstration was also staged at the II Town police station where the arrested leaders were lodged denouncing the police action.
