Alleging delay in execution of the ambitious SRSP flood flow canal, the CPI district unit has threatened to launch agitation demanding the execution of Thotapalli balancing reservoir across the flood flow canal project in Karimnagar district.

The CPI delegation led by its senior leader Chada Venkat Reddy, district secretary Marri Venkat Swamy and others visited the Thotapalli project site on Monday and interacted with the villagers, who would lose their lands under the project.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Venkat Reddy said that the SRSP flood flow canal was conceived in 1984 by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in Jangaon.

Later, then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao laid foundation stone for the project in 1993.

Since then, the project was progressing at a snail’s pace. However, after 2004 the Congress government took up the project under ‘Jalayagnam’ and dug up the canals till Mid Manair Dam, he said.

Even the MMD project was incomplete as the government had completed only earth work and failed to take up barrage works.

On the other hand, there was no execution of Thotapalli reservoir in spite of acquiring land for the project, he alleged.
